Definition: The claim that AI systems are on the verge of achieving human-level or superhuman general intelligence, often accompanied by dramatic timelines (5-10 years) and apocalyptic or utopian framing.

The Masking Mechanism: The mask is the use of extrapolation from narrow benchmarks (e.g., GPT-x passing bar exams, solving math problems) as if they indicate general understanding. Terms like “reasoning”, “understanding”, and “agency” are applied to systems that are statistically matching patterns, not thinking. The mask works because the public sees fluent language and assumes fluent thought, while the technical reality is narrow, brittle, and deeply dependent on training data.

Genuine Parallel: The genuine parallel is the steady progress in narrow AI – vision, translation, game playing, protein folding. Those are real, testable, useful. The mimicry is the leap from “useful tool” to “conscious entity”, a leap that serves hype cycles, stock prices, and existential fear-mongering, not science.
