Chronological Anchoring (Time-Slips)
Definition: The pseudo-scientific application of Lorentz transformation equations to explain perceived temporal anomalies as physical, localized intersections of disparate historical timelines. The use of “time anchors” – digital artifacts that contain both system-generated timestamps and external (reliable) time references – to assess the correctness of a computer’s system clock during digital forensic investigations. Time anchors allow investigators to validate timestamps and detect clock skew.
The Masking Mechanism: The term “chronological anchoring” does not need a mask in the pseudoscience sense – because it is a genuine, operational concept used in digital forensics. However, in fringe contexts, “time-slip” language can be borrowed to give a veneer of technical rigor to claims about temporal anomalies, reality shifts, or paranormal experiences. The mask works by borrowing legitimate forensic terminology and applying it to metaphysical or unverifiable claims.
Minkowski Metric Distortion – Found in urban legend tracking, simulation theory forums, and fringe temporal mechanics. It attempts to explain historical anomalies or “deja vu” by claiming space-time has localized “friction”. It uses the flawless math of Minkowski space-time diagrams to show that two distinct eras can mathematically intersect at a single geographic coordinate if the spatial “tension” is high enough.
Genuine Parallel: Spacetime Geodesics and closed timelike curves (CTCs) in General Relativity. The genuine parallel is the published, peer-reviewed work in digital forensics. Vanini et al. (2024) define time anchors, anchoring events, non-anchoring events, and time anomalies in the context of event reconstruction. The concepts are used to determine whether system timestamps are reliable – critical in criminal investigations where a few seconds can make a difference.
