Integrated Information Theory (IIT)
Definition: A mathematical framework that quantifies consciousness as a physical property based on the system’s degree of interconnected data processing, scaling from brains to inanimate objects via matrix algebra. It was developed by neuroscientist Giulio Tononi that aims to quantify consciousness using a measure called Φ (“phi”), based on the idea that consciousness is identical to the integration of information within a system.

IIT is a mainstream neuroscientific theory of consciousness, but it borders on the fringe because its math implies everything has a little bit of consciousness. By using incredibly complex multidimensional matrix calculus to calculate a score called Φ (Phi), it mathematically claims a smart thermostat or a proton could possess a tiny shred of awareness.
The mask is the mathematical rigor of the framework – it uses real information theory, causal analysis, and formal systems theory. The mask works because the mathematics is real; IIT has been applied to brain data and even to AI systems. But the core claim – that consciousness is integrated information – is an ontological leap, not an empirical finding. Critics argue that IIT’s measure Φ may attribute consciousness to systems like power grids or gene networks, which are not conscious by any conventional definition. The mask is the blurring of correlation with identity.
Genuine Parallel: Information Theory (Shannon entropy) and neural network dynamics. The genuine parallel is the broader field of consciousness science, where IIT is one of several competing frameworks (alongside Global Workspace Theory, Higher-Order Theory, etc.). The mimicry is the overclaim of identity – presenting a mathematical measure as if it is consciousness itself, rather than a model of it.
