Morphic Resonance
Definition: A fringe biological hypothesis stating that self-organizing systems inherit a collective memory across space and time via non-material fields, masked by the mathematical vocabulary of wave mechanics. The hypothesis, proposed by Rupert Sheldrake, that “memory is inherent in nature” – that natural systems inherit a collective memory from all previous things of their kind, through a process of “formative causation” that is non-local and not mediated by known physical forces. It suggests that newly synthesized chemicals become easier to make, puzzles easier to solve, and organisms develop according to patterns established by their ancestors.

The mask hides the fact that the theory makes predictions that have not been confirmed – new chemicals do not become easier to synthesize, puzzles do not become easier to solve – and that the hypothesis is widely rejected as pseudoscience.

The genuine parallel is the legitimate concept of morphogenetic fields in developmental biology – the idea that groups of cells respond to chemical signals during development. Sheldrake’s extension – morphic resonance – remains untested and is not accepted.
