Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP)

Definition: NLP is a self-help and therapeutic framework that claims to model human behavior and communication, using techniques like “reframing” to change cognitive patterns.

The Masking Mechanism: The mask is the use of psychological and neurological jargon – words like “modeling”, “anchoring”, and “framing” – to give the impression that NLP is scientifically validated. In reality, it is a set of untested techniques with little empirical support. The mask works because it borrows the authority of legitimate therapy while sidestepping its rigor.

Genuine Parallel: The genuine parallel is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), which does have a strong evidence base. NLP mimics the language of CBT without replicating its methods or its results.
