Quantum Consciousness (Orch-OR Theory)

Definition: This is the claim that consciousness arises from quantum computations occurring inside microtubules – structural proteins within brain neurons. It proposes that quantum superposition and entanglement persist at biological temperatures, allowing the brain to access states of awareness that are non-local and potentially universal.

The Masking Mechanism: The theory borrows genuine, legitimate quantum physics – superposition, decoherence, wavefunction collapse – and applies them to a biological structure (microtubules) that sounds like it could be a plausible site for such effects. It uses the language of neurobiology and quantum mechanics in tandem, creating an illusion of interdisciplinary depth. The mask works because the audience cannot easily disentangle the real physics from the speculative biology.

Genuine Parallel: There is a genuine field of quantum biology that studies actual quantum effects in photosynthesis, avian magnetoreception, and enzyme catalysis. These are real, measured phenomena. Orch-OR takes the existence of these effects and extrapolates them into a grand theory of consciousness, without any empirical evidence that the brain actually supports such coherence.
