Scalar Electrodynamics (Scalar Waves)

Definition: A fringe field of physics claiming the existence of non-directional, unmeasurable electromagnetic waves that propagate faster than light, defended using alternative mathematical interpretations of Maxwell’s original formulations. The claim that there exist longitudinal electromagnetic waves – often called “scalar waves” – that are not described by standard Maxwellian electrodynamics, can penetrate any shielding, transmit energy without loss, and have been used by Nikola Tesla. Proponents argue these waves are “more complete electromagnetism” or “Tesla waves”.

The Masking Mechanism: The mask works by using legitimate terminology from electrodynamics – “scalar potential”, “longitudinal wave”, “Maxwell’s equations” – and asserting that these imply a new type of wave. The mask hides the fact that there is no consensus on whether “scalar waves” exist as described; that the derivations are contested and often unphysical; and that the concept is considered pseudoscience by mainstream physicists . Even the paper that attempts to legitimize LSWs admits the term is “not a well-established or widely recognized scientific term within mainstream physics”.

Maxwellian Deconstruction – Adherents claim that standard physics intentionally “deleted” parts of James Clerk Maxwell’s original 19th-century equations. They use complex quaternion mathematics to prove the existence of “longitudinal magnetic waves” that mainstream sensors supposedly cannot detect.

Genuine Parallel: Classical Electromagnetism and vector calculus. The genuine parallel is the legitimate use of “scalar” and “longitudinal” in physics: sound waves are pressure waves (scalar fields), and the scalar potential is a legitimate concept in electrodynamics. The mimicry is the claim that these imply a new type of electromagnetic wave with exotic properties.
