For nearly a century, we have known that our Universe is expanding. For the past quarter-century, we have also known that this expansion is accelerating, a discovery that earned the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics. But what is the mysterious \u201cdark energy\u201d that drives this acceleration? The simplest explanation involves what Einstein dubbed a \u201ccosmological constant\u201d (\u039b) and implies that dark energy is a constant energy inherent to spacetime itself. This idea is the cornerstone of the standard model of cosmology.
\nNow the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) has created a cosmic map of unprecedented scale. Its findings, combined with those from other observations, suggest that dark energy might not be so constant after all, a tantalizing hint that our understanding of the cosmos may be on the verge of a major revision.<\/p>\n
