Another 70 new reactors were under construction in 15 nations<\/strong>. Nuclear electricity production in recent years has been around 2,700 TWh, representing approximately 9% of total global electricity consumption and almost a third of that generated without polluting emissions. Nuclear power is the second largest low-carbon energy source after hydropower.<\/p>\n<p><a Unit 1 of the Bailong Nuclear Power Plant, a 1,254 MWe PWF1 CAP-1000 pressurized water reactor; Unit 1 of the Jinqimen Nuclear Power Plant, a 1,233 MWe PWR HPR-1000 pressurized water reactor; Unit 3 of the Sanao Nuclear Power Plant, a 1,215 MWe PWR HPR-1000 pressurized water reactor; Unit 3 of the Taipingling Nuclear Power Plant, a 1,209 MWe PWR HPR-1000 pressurized water reactor; and Units 1 and 2 of the Lufeng Nuclear Power Plant, two 1,250 MWe PWR CAP-1000 pressurized water reactors.<br \/>\nRussia &#8211; Unit 4 of the Leningrad-2 nuclear power plant, a 1,199 MWe VVER-V-491 pressurized water reactor.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Three reactors were connected to the grid during 2025<\/strong>:<br \/>\nChina &#8211; Unit 2 of the Zhangzhou nuclear power plant, a 1,212 MWe HPF1000 pressurized water reactor.<br \/>\nIndia &#8211; Unit 7 of the Rajasthan nuclear power plant, a 700 MWe PHWR heavy water reactor.<br \/>\nRussia &#8211; Unit 1 of the Kursk-2 nuclear power plant, a 1,255 MWe VVER-V-510 pressurized water reactor.<\/p>\n<p><strong>During 2025, seven reactors were permanently shut down<\/strong>:<br \/>\nBelgium &#8211; Units 1 and 2 of the Doel nuclear power plant, two 454 MWe WH-2LP pressurized water reactors, and Unit 1 of the Tihange nuclear power plant, a 1,009 MWe Framatome-SLP pressurized water reactor.<br \/>\nRussia &#8211; font-size: 11px\">Photo: Control Room of Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant (Getty)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>A third of existing nuclear reactors have long-term operating licenses<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Long-term operation is common practice in various countries around the world and is a sound strategy for simultaneously meeting the fundamental aspects of sustainable development, as it guarantees energy independence and diversification, contributes to combating climate change, and helps to contain market prices.<br \/>\nSeveral international studies show that it is technically feasible to operate nuclear power plants for 60 to 80 years while maintaining the safety and reliability levels required by national and international legislation.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, as of December 31, 2025, there were 142 nuclear reactors worldwide whose operating licenses had been granted or renewed by the various competent authorities in 15 countries for at least 60 years, under different schemes: in some cases, licenses were granted for an additional 20 years beyond the initially planned period, in others for a fixed term, and in still others indefinitely.
