Mona Lisa is so famous not because it is good art, there are, after all, many good paintings, but because of many chance circumstances – says Alicja Zelazko in an article for Encyclopaedia Britannica
\nThere is no doubt that the Mona Lisa is a very good painting, but the excellent quality of the portrait was not enough by itself to make the painting a celebrity. External events also contributed to the artwork\u2019s fame, the Mona Lisa\u2019s fame is the result of many chance circumstances combined with the painting\u2019s inherent appeal.
\nAccording to Zelazko, those “circumstances”, more or less, are: being in Louvre (the world’s most visited museum), speculations about the identity of the portrait sitter, theft of the painting in 1911 (Pablo Picasso being arrested as a suspect), Marcel Duchamp\u2019s playful defacement in 1919, Andy Warhol’s distortions, disfigurations or playing with the reproductions, and lately being endlessly reproducted with the improvement of technology.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
