AI Consciousness (Digital Sentience)

Definition: The assertion that current or near-future AI systems are or will soon be conscious, sentient, or deserving of moral consideration, often based on subjective reports from users or engineers.

The Masking Mechanism: The mask is the borrowing of terms from neuroscience and philosophy of mind “consciousness”, “self-awareness”, “subjective experience” – and applying them to systems that have no known mechanism for such phenomena. The mask works because the language is familiar, and the outputs (fluent, empathetic, persuasive) create a powerful illusion. Meanwhile, no one has defined what consciousness is in a way that can be measured in code.

Genuine Parallel: The genuine parallel is the study of consciousness in humans and animals, grounded in neuroscience, behavioral experiments, and clinical observation. AI consciousness mimicry is philosophy without the rigor – often just marketing dressed as metaphysics.
