Climate Change Denialism

Definition: This is the practice of presenting arguments against the scientific consensus on climate change using the language of science – citing papers, questioning methodologies, calling for “more research” – while systematically ignoring the overwhelming weight of evidence.

The Masking Mechanism: The mask is the appearance of scientific skepticism. Denialists adopt the posture of the cautious scientist, the one who demands rigor and refuses to be rushed to judgment. They point to uncertainties in climate models, to historical temperature variations, to the complexity of the climate system. They cite a handful of outlier papers and present them as if they were representative of the field. The mask works because it looks like science – it uses the same vocabulary, the same gestures, the same demand for evidence. But it is a performance. It is skepticism without the willingness to be convinced.

Genuine Parallel: The genuine parallel is legitimate scientific debate. Science does involve questioning, skepticism, and the demand for evidence. The difference is that legitimate skepticism follows the evidence where it leads, while denialism starts with a conclusion and works backward, selecting only the evidence that supports it.
