Dark Matter and Dark Energy
Definition: These are placeholder terms for 95% of the universe’s mass-energy that we cannot directly observe. Dark matter is inferred from gravitational effects, dark energy from the accelerating expansion of the universe.
The Masking Mechanism: The mask is the presentation of these terms as if they are known entities, rather than labels for our ignorance. The word “dark” sounds like a category, but it is actually a confession. The mask works because it allows the scientific community to proceed with the mathematics as if the problem were solved.
Genuine Parallel: The genuine parallel is Newtonian gravity, which was also a placeholder for a deeper understanding until Einstein came along. The difference is that Newton could not have known what he was missing; we are in a similar position today, but we often forget it.

The most exquisite irony of all, the real scientists built the cage, they use it, they defined it, they defined their own “cage”. They gave it a name, they gave it equations, they gave it a prominent place in the standard cosmological model. And when a pseudoscientist borrows the term “dark matter” to sell a healing crystal or a quantum life-coaching session, they are not stealing from the fringe – they are stealing from the heart of institutional physics. The mimic does not have to invent the mask. The mask was handed to them, polished and framed, by the very people who claim to despise pseudoscience.
In the case of homeopathy or NLP, the pseudoscience is parasitic – it attaches itself to legitimate fields and distorts them. But dark matter and dark energy are different. They are internal to the institution. They are not a distortion of science, they are a confession of science’s limits, dressed in the language of discovery. And because they are internal, they are protected. They are taught in universities. They are funded. They are cited in Nobel lectures. They are the official mask.
And that is why they are so much more dangerous than the others. Because when the public hears a pseudoscientist talking about “dark energy”, they might be skeptical. But when they hear a tenured astrophysicist talking about “dark energy” they trust it. And yet, the tenured astrophysicist is saying, in effect – we do not know what 68% of the universe is made of, but we have given it a name that makes it sound like we do. That is not a lie, but it is a performance – a performance of certainty where there is only mystery.
The cage is real, and the scientists are the ones who built it – not out of malice, but out of necessity. Because you cannot run a cosmology department on “we have no idea”. You need a placeholder, you need a name. You need something to put in the equations while you wait for the next generation of instruments to tell you whether you are right or wrong. But in the meantime, the placeholder becomes a fact, the name becomes an entity, and the cage becomes a home.
We should try to think that the cage is perhaps temporary (it should be), we need to remember that the mask is not the face. We need to remember that even the most respected scientists are, in the end, just humans pointing instruments at the sky, trying to make sense of a universe that does not owe us an explanation.
