Dis-Ease Equivocation in Faith Healing

Definition: This is the linguistic trick of using the construction “dis-ease” (spoken to sound exactly like “disease”) to conflate psychological discomfort with medical pathology, allowing faith healers to claim they are curing medical conditions when they are merely offering emotional comfort.

The Masking Mechanism: The mask is the homophone itself. When spoken aloud, “dis-ease” is indistinguishable from “disease”, and the audience hears the word disease – a serious medical condition requiring treatment. The healer then offers a “cure” for the “dis-ease”, which the audience interprets as a cure for the disease. The mask works because it exploits the ambiguity of spoken language, allowing the healer to claim legitimacy without making any verifiable medical claim.

Genuine Parallel: The genuine parallel is the psychosomatic effect – the real, measurable impact of psychological state on physical health. But the psychosomatic effect is a side effect of genuine belief, not a mechanism for curing disease through spiritual intervention.
