Inva Mula – Il dolce suono, 1997

Lucia Di Lammermoor (Lyrics) – (aria by Gaetano Donizetti, used in the movie The Fifth Element, 1997)

Il dolce suono mi colpi di sua voce!
Ah, quella voce m’e qui nel cor discesa!
Edgardo! io ti son resa, Edgardo, mio!
fuggita io son de tuoi nemici.
Un gelo me serpeggia nel sen!
trema ogni fibra!
Oh, me felice!
Oh gioia che si sente, e non si dice!
Ardon gl’incensi!
Splendon le sacre faci, splendon intorno!
Ecco il ministro!
Porgime la destra!
Oh lieto giorno!
Al fin son tua, al fin sei mia,
a me ti dona un Dio.
Ogni piacer piu grato,
mi fia con te diviso
Del ciel clemente un riso
la vita a noi sara.

For his contribution to the arts, her father would receive two of the highest Albanian awards, the People’s Artist decoration (Artist i Popullit), which was an honorary title for outstanding art performers of the People’s Socialist Republic of Albania. Receivers were to be truly exceptional in the sphere of development of the performing arts. And in 2008, by the then Albanian President Bamir Topi, Avni Mula received the Honor of the Nation (Nderi i Kombit) decoration.

[ Inva Mula ]
Inva Mula (born 1963, in Tirana) is an Albanian, internationally renowned soprano singer. She’s the daughter of Avni Mula (1928-2020), who was also a musician and composer, born 1928, in Gjakova, Kosovo. Inva Mula studied singing and piano in her native city, Tirana. In 1987, in the “Singer of Albania” competition, she won the 1st prize. Some years later, she was the prize-winner in Bucharest, Romania, in 1991 (George Enescu Competition). After that Inva would go on to win other awards in the various competitions, notably the Grand Prix Madame Butterfly in Barcelona, in May 1992, and the next year 1993, the Concours International de Voix d’Opera Placido Domingo in Paris.

Inva Mula is also best known as the “voice” of the Diva Plavalaguna, in the 1997 film directed by Luc Besson, The Fifth Element. She performed the aria “Il dolce suono” from the mad scene of Gaetano Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor and “The Diva Dance“.

Since 1992-93, her soprano career was full of performances, of course, her repertoire is extensive and world-renowned. But in 2013 Inva released an album titled “Për Ty Atdhe” (For You Fatherand), I dare to think as if it was some kind of “special” album, or at the very least, the most “patriotically charged” album ever : )

It was recorded in Slovenia and all the songs are like: Për Ty Atdhe (For You Fatherland), Dua Më Shumë Shqipërinë (I Love Albania More), Për Mëmëdhenë (For the Motherland – cause in Albanian you can say Fatherland or Motherland, both terms are correct, depending contextually), Agimet Shqiptare (Albanian Dawns), O Moj e Bukura Arbëri (Oh Beautiful Arberia), Hej Ju Male (Hey You Mountains), Alfabeti Shqip (Albanian Alphabet), Shqipëri Vendi Im (Albania, My Country), Himni i Flamurit (Flag Anthem), Unë Biri Yt Kosovë (I, Your Son, Kosovo) – which, I think, it was a tribute to her father. More or less, perhaps, the whole album was a tribute to her father (at that time still alive, he died 7 years later, in 2020).

Her father, Avni Mula was young when his family moved from Kosovo, in northern Albania (from Gjakova to Shkodër). After World War II, Inva’s father moved again to Tirana. From there he would “move” again temporarily, he got the chance to study at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow, where he graduated in 1957. While studying in Russia, there he found his love Nina (a Russian woman from Izhevsk). Thus, Inva’s mother was Nina Mula (1931-2011).
