We dug into millions of Meta ads to see how scammers really work – [ Norton LifeLock – Tempe, Arizona / *Gen Digital Inc. ]
Over just 23 days, Gen Threat Labs pulled 14.5 million Meta ads from the EU and UK under the microscope – and the pattern was surprising. Nearly in 3 of those ads, seen hundreds of mflfions of times, funneled people toward scams, phishing, or outright malware. All of these are part of a bigger, Industrial-scale scam machine built into today’s ad ecosystem.
The same systems that make ads incredibly effective are also making scams incredibly scalable. Meta’s ad engine is built to find the right person at the right moment – and scammers simply plug into it.
And now with all the powerful targeting, fast approvals, and constant optimization, bad actors can test, tweak, and relaunch campaigns faster than they can be stopped. The result scams that blend In perfectly.
This isn’t being done by a bunch of scammers- A surprisingly small cluster of groups is driving a huge share of the damage. These ‘scam-vertisers’ run sophisticated machines that flood screens you use with ads.
They can spin up new ads, accounts, and throwaway sites in minutes, so when one campaign goes down, another pops up. Moderators are then left playing constant catch-up.
While they can’t all be stopped, a few simple habits can help you outsmart ad scammers. Always sanity-check an ad and double-checking the address bar for any weird spellings or off-looking URLs. Then, bolster your browsing with something that blocks phishing and scam sites and flag suspicious redirects in real time, letting you scroll without the worry.
