Was once a human who became a Thinking Machine by losing their human body for mechanical bodies. It is a human who turned themselves into a cyborg. Ten thousand years before the events of the first Dune movie, humanity became lazy and let computers rule their lives. Seeing this weakness, a small group of twenty ruthless, ambitious humans staged a coup and conquered the entire galaxy. They called themselves The Titans. To rule forever and become immortal, these Titans surgically removed their own living human brains and placed them inside life-support canisters filled with preservation fluid. They then connected their brains to massive, heavily weaponized robotic bodies. These human-brained walking war machines are Cymeks. Eventually, the Cymeks got lazy too and built a massive artificial intelligence named Omnius to run things. Omnius went rogue, hijacked the network, and enslaved the Cymeks. This horrific era of robot-and-cyborg tyranny is exactly what triggered the Butlerian Jihad – the massive galactic crusade where humanity fought a century-long war to smash all “thinking machines”. This history is why AI is strictly illegal by the time Paul Atreides is born.
