Faufreluches

A term used to describe the class system adopted by the Imperium of the old empire. If Face Dancers represent a world where nothing is stable, the Faufreluches system is a world where nothing is allowed to change. The Faufreluches is the rigid, strict, and inescapable caste system of the galactic Empire. It is summed up by the universal imperial motto: “A place for every man, and every man in his place”. Under this system, your entire life, social standing, and career are completely determined by the family you are born into.
The Top – The Padishah Emperor and the noble Great Houses (like the Atreides and Harkonnens) who own entire planets.
The Middle – Highly specialized professionals, like the Spacing Guild navigators or Mentat advisors.
The Bottom – Millions of nameless peasants, laborers, and slaves who have zero rights, zero freedom, and can never change their social status.
Frank Herbert adapted this term from an old French word (fauvefre – uches) used by the Renaissance writer Rabelais to mean “gaudy baubles” or “nonsense”. In Dune, the Emperor and the noble houses created this brutal system on purpose to maintain total stability and control across the galaxy. Because human computers are banned, the Empire relies on predictable, obedient human cogs to keep the economy running. The Faufreluches system turns the galaxy into a giant, unmoving pyramid. It is a suffocating way of life, and it is exactly why the wild, free, and uncontrollable Fremen of Arrakis are such a massive threat to the Emperor – they completely refuse to be a part of it.
