Galach

The official language of the Imperium in ‘Dune’. Galach is the universal language spoken by trillions of humans across the Empire. It is the language of politics, business, law, and daily life. If you are a noble Baron, a CHOAM corporate executive, or a lowly factory worker on a distant planet, you speak Galach to communicate. Derived from the ancient languages of Earth, the language got spoken and written in many dialects.

The fascinating part is its origin – Galach is a hybrid language that evolved out of ancient Earth languages. In the lore, it is described as a mixture of English, Russian, and various Slavic and East Asian languages. This makes historical sense because, tens of thousands of years before the books, these were the dominant cultures that first left Earth to colonize the stars. Over millennia, their languages naturally melted together into one single tongue.

Frank Herbert used it to show how language evolves, unifies, and controls a massive galactic population over tens of thousands of years. He used Galach to create a sharp contrast with the Fremen. While the civilized Empire speaks Galach, the Fremen speak an ancient, evolved version of Arabic among themselves. By having the Fremen speak a completely different language, Herbert shows how isolated and independent they are from the Emperor’s rule. When Paul Atreides and his mother first meet the Fremen, the fact that they can speak both official Galach and the Fremen’s private language allows them to quickly earn the natives’ trust. It proves that language in Dune is just as powerful a tool for survival as a shield or a crysknife.
