Honored Matres
An aggressive matriarchal order that arose after the death of the God-emperor, Leto II, and are obsessed with power and dominance. The Honored Matres are the explosive, hyper-violent villains of the final two original Dune books. If the Bene Gesserit are silent, calculating puppet masters, the Honored Matres are their loud, sadistic, and utterly unhinged cousins who prefer to conquer planets through brute force and terror. During “The Scattering” – the massive chaotic migration of trillions of people leaving the empire after the death of the tyrant Leto Il – a group of rogue Bene Gesserit sisters merged with rogue Fish Speaker soldiers. Far away in the deep unknown of space, their cultures blended and corrupted, mutating into the Honored Matres. They eventually return to the known universe like a devastating plague, easily destroying entire planetary civilizations and wiping out the Harkonnen homeworld of Giedi Prime. They are recognizable by their striking, bloodshot eyes that flare orange when they are angry.
The Honored Matres possess two lethal advantages that make them almost unstoppable:
Superhuman Reflexes – They have weaponized their physical bodies to move with blinding, supernatural speed, allowing them to effortlessly kick a person’s head off before the victim can even blink.
Sexual Mind Control – Their primary weapon is a highly advanced, chemical form of sexual addiction. By using precise, biologically calculated techniques during intercourse, they can instantly enslave the mind of any man, transforming powerful planetary leaders and generals into mindless, obedient slaves. Frank Herbert used the Honored Matres to show the dangerous consequences of absolute power without any moral or religious restraint. They represent a dark reflection of what the Bene Gesserit could have become if they abandoned their long-term patience and opted for immediate, violent galactic domination.
