Integrated Information Theory (IIT)
Definition: A mathematical framework that quantifies consciousness as a physical property based on the system’s degree of interconnected data processing, scaling from brains to inanimate objects via matrix algebra.
The Masking Mechanism: Phi (0) Metric Optimization. IIT is a mainstream neuroscientific theory of consciousness, but it borders on the fringe because its math implies everything has a little bit of consciousness. By using incredibly complex multidimensional matrix calculus to calculate a score called (D (Phi), it mathematically claims a smart thermostat or a proton could possess a tiny shred of awareness.
Genuine Parallel: Information Theory (Shannon entropy) and neural network dynamics.
