Mercy, 2026

Directed by Timur Bekmambetov, Mercy is a sci-fi thriller set in a future where criminal cases are tried by AI judges. Chris Pratt stars as a detective who is accused of murdering his wife and must prove his innocence to an AI judge (Rebecca Ferguson) within 90 minutes or face execution. The movie also features Kali Reis, Annabelle Wallis, Chris Sullivan, and Kylie Rogers in supporting roles.

Mercy follows a detective, Chris Raven (played by Chris Pratt), who is accused of killing his wife. The film takes place in an alternate, dystopian future where those accused of serious crimes like murder must stand trial in front of a Mercy court, which is held by an AI judge. After finding himself wrongfully accused of murdering his wife and with the evidence stacked against him, Chris Raven has only 90 minutes to prove his innocence and find his way out of the chair. Annabelle Wallis, famed for her role in Peaky Blinders, also has a key role in Mercy. Timur Bekmambetov directed the film with a script from Marco van Belle.

Released in January 2026, Mercy was quite negatively received by critics and ultimately proved a flop at the box office, garnering a lot of unfavorable comparisons to similar techno-thriller films like Minority Report and Robocop. On the bright side, the AI-centered plot and quick pacing make the film fairly enjoyable for contemporary audiences, and Pratt and Ferguson deliver compelling performances as the movie’s leads. It’s not one of the best films of either of their careers, but the movie is still tightly put together and a much better watch than the reviews make it out to be.
