Stone Burner
A weapon that uses atomic fuel to create intense explosions and radiation harmful to all living things. The most terrifying, horrific, and politically controversial weapon used in the entire series (it plays a massive role in the second book, Dune Messiah). A Stone Burner is a specialized atomic weapon. It uses a core of thermonuclear fuel, but it does not detonate like a traditional, massive nuclear bomb that blows up a whole city. Instead, it concentrates its explosive energy downward, drilling a blinding, hyper-intense beam of heat and radiation straight into the core of a planet. If a Stone Burner uses too much fuel, it can literally melt a planet’s crust, causing the world to collapse in on itself like a dying star.
The Terrifying J-Ray (The Biological Horror) – The true horror of a Stone Burner is the unique radiation it emits, known as J-Rays. If a human being is caught within a few miles of a Stone Burner explosion, they don’t necessarily get blown up. Instead, the J-Rays instantly burn away the physical structure of their eyes, leaving the victims completely, permanently blind with empty, melted sockets.
The Ultimate Legal Loophole – Why would someone use this weapon if it is so horrific? It all comes down to the Great Convention – the imperial law that strictly bans using nuclear weapons against human beings. The faction that deploys a Stone Burner against Paul Atreides argues that because a Stone Burner relies on laser-focused, downward heat rather than a traditional blast wave, it technically bypasses the legal definition of an “atomic weapon”. It is a grotesque example of using legal definitions and corporate loopholes to commit an act of mass terror.
