…I had read on [ W ] that French critics had a less enthusiastic view than those from Britain and America, considering Napoleon “lazy, pointless, boring, migraine-inducing, too short and historically inaccurate“. A review in Le Figaro stated that the film could have been called “Barbie and Ken under the Empire“, and another in the French edition of GQ deemed it to be “deeply clumsy, unnatural and unintentionally funny“. Note: according to [ W ] the underwater scenes were filmed at Pinewood Studios (vicinity of London), thus no horses, no animals were hurt… also the whole movie was shot in 2 months (almost entirely in England – some scenes in Malta and Morocco – even the “Notre Dame” was faked, in Lincoln, thus no Paris : )
