Qadisha Valley, Lebanon – Bsherreh from Wadi Kadesha, American Colony (Jerusalem) c. 1900-20 (Library of Congress).
The Kadisha Valley stretches between the villages of Becharre and Zgharta in Northern Lebanon. Due to its remoteness and many caves, it served as an ideal hiding place for early Christians fleeing Roman persecution. It has remained over the centuries home to many monasteries and holds particular significance for Maronite Christians in the region. Its name “qadisha” means “holy” in Aramaic, much like the Arabic word from the same root “muqaddas.”
