(…did you know that in 2022 Barbie dolls were taken to the International Space Station as part of an effort to encourage girls to pursue careers in STEM…)

Probably, Enc. Britannica is the only encyclopedia in the world to celebrate Barbie’s birthday in such a lovely “encyclopedic way” : ) On their frontpage they say Barbie is celebrating her 67th birthday today (March 9, 2026), though she doesn’t look a day over her original age of 19.

And thus, I learned some facts about Barbie there – so lets celebrate, after 67 years she deserves 1 article from us too : )

Barbie Doll

Barbie is a fashion doll franchise created by American businesswoman Ruth Handler, manufactured by American toy and entertainment company Mattel and introduced on March 9, 1959. The toy was based on the German Bild Lilli doll which Handler had purchased while in Europe.

The doll, whose full name is Barbara Millicent Roberts, was the brainchild of Mattel cofounder Ruth Handler. And despite repeated criticism of the doll's unrealistic body, Barbie has evolved to become an international icon.

The inspiration for the toy was very adult-oriented: Lilli, a flirtatious gold-digging sexpot who originated as a cartoon character in the West German newspaper Bild Zeitung. Lilli became so popular that she was made into a plastic doll in 1955, a gag gift for men that unexpectedly became popular with children. Handler was looking for a breakthrough product for Mattel - a doll that would inspire girls the same way action figures encouraged boys - and Lilli caught her eye during a family trip to Europe in 1956.

When she debuted in 1959, Barbie's profession was a fashion model. Since then the doll has had more than 250 careers, some of which were ahead of her time.

In 1965, some 13 years before women were admitted to the astronaut corps at NASA, Mattel introduced an astronaut Barbie. And in 2022 Barbie dolls were taken to the International Space Station as part of an effort to encourage girls to pursue careers in STEM.
Barbie became a surgeon in 1973, when less than 10 percent of doctors were women, and has also served in the military, joining the U.S. Army in 1989 and three years later becoming a sergeant in the Marine Corps.
