…sometimes you have to step beyond “traditional ideas”, as if you have to ignore “traditional logic” and take a glimpse into the future – at least for a while. To truly innovate, you have to stop listening to “common sense” and simply stare intensely into the future. Take Dubai, for example, Dubai is a perfect example. We may “see” a metropolis rising in the middle of the desert, a megacity made of glass and concrete, powered by machines, technology, and sheer ambition. And we may forget the rest, we’ll be amazed and say “wooow, what a modern beauty”. But we may also wonder how it’s possible, it’s a vast urban world with no natural river in sight. The UAE visionaries perhaps looked at a giant sandbox and thought, “you know what this needs, a shimmering megapolis of glass and concrete” : )

It takes a special kind of audacity to look at a wasteland and say “let’s put a skyscraper here”. The entire UAE is essentially a riverless country, building a riverless city that basically functions as one massive, high-tech machine running on sheer willpower and an incredible amount of air conditioning. It’s not just “thinking outside the box” – it’s the kind of audacity that looks at a wasteland and decides to build a concrete jungle where a city shouldn’t even exist. You have to be willing to escape the traditional mindset – and occasionally ask “why build beside a river when you can build the river?” : )
